In short: A 25 kg bag of MegaTech tile adhesive covers about 2.9–12.5 m², depending on tile size and trowel. The calculation is simple: divide 25 kg by the kg/m² value in the data sheet. For example, MTC-2221 on 20–40 cm tiles with an 8 mm trowel uses 5–6 kg/m², so one bag covers about 4.2–5 m².
This guide shows the data sheet consumption of four MegaTech tile adhesives, the per-bag calculation, the difference between single-sided and double-sided bonding, and a worked take-off. For the application steps, see how to fix ceramic tiles; for the product classes, see the difference between C1TE and C2TE.
How many m² does one bag of tile adhesive cover?
According to MegaTech data sheets, a 25 kg bag covers from about 2.9 m² to 12.5 m², depending on the product and application. The calculation is the same for every product: divide 25 kg by the kg/m² value in the data sheet. Where consumption is given as a range, the upper value gives the lowest coverage per bag and the lower value the highest.
| Product | Data sheet consumption (kg/m²) | Area covered by a 25 kg bag (m²) |
|---|---|---|
| MTC-2221 | 2–8, by tile size | About 3.1–12.5 |
| MTC-2222 | Single-sided 4–5.5; double-sided 5–8 | Single-sided about 4.5–6.25; double-sided about 3.1–5 |
| MTC-2232 | 4–5 | 5–6.25 |
| MTC-2233 | Single-sided 4.00–6.50; double-sided 5.50–8.50 | Single-sided about 3.8–6.25 (the data sheet’s own column: about 3.5–6); double-sided about 2.9–4.5 |

Mega Insulation Solutions (Mega Yalıtım) offers four cement-based tile adhesives under its MegaTech brand: Tile and Ceramic Adhesive Mortar (MTC-2221), Flex Tile and Ceramic Adhesive Mortar (MTC-2222), Granite Tile Adhesive Mortar (MTC-2232) and Ultra Flexible Granite Tile Adhesive Mortar (MTC-2233). All four come in 25 kg kraft bags.
What does tile adhesive consumption depend on?
In MegaTech data sheets, tile adhesive consumption is set by tile size, trowel size and single-sided or double-sided bonding. The European standard EN 12004-1 defines the performance requirements of the adhesive and gives no criteria for tile design and installation, so do the calculation with the data sheet of the product you are using.
- Tile size: The MTC-2221 data sheet ties consumption to tile size (cm), and the MTC-2222 data sheet to tile area (cm²).
- Trowel size: Within a data sheet, consumption rises with notch size. In MTC-2221, the value of 2 kg/m² at a 3 mm notch rises to 7–8 kg/m² at a 10 mm notch.
- Single-sided or double-sided bonding: The MTC-2222 and MTC-2233 data sheets give separate values for the two methods.
- Surface and workmanship: A calculation from data sheet values is theoretical; the evenness of the surface and the workmanship can change actual consumption. The MTC-2221, MTC-2222 and MTC-2232 data sheets call for an even application surface.
How many m² does 25 kg of adhesive cover by tile size?
In the MTC-2221 data sheet, the notch grows with tile size, and the area covered by a 25 kg bag falls from 12.5 m² to about 3.1 m².
| Tile size | Notch size | Consumption (kg/m²) | Calculation | 25 kg bag (m²) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 5 cm | 3 mm | 2 | 25 ÷ 2 | 12.5 |
| 5–10 cm | 4 mm | 2–3 | 25 ÷ 3 and 25 ÷ 2 | About 8.3–12.5 |
| 10–20 cm | 6 mm | 4 | 25 ÷ 4 | 6.25 |
| 20–40 cm | 8 mm | 5–6 | 25 ÷ 6 and 25 ÷ 5 | About 4.2–5 |
| Over 40 cm | 10 mm | 7–8 | 25 ÷ 8 and 25 ÷ 7 | About 3.1–3.6 |

MTC-2221 is defined for small and medium tiles, and its data sheet gives no separate value for double-sided bonding. If you will also spread mortar on the back of the tile, do not use the coverage in this table.

How does consumption change between single-sided and double-sided bonding?
According to the MTC-2222 and MTC-2233 data sheets, double-sided bonding raises consumption by 1–2.5 kg/m² with the same trowel. In single-sided bonding the mortar goes on the surface only; in double-sided bonding it goes on the surface and the back of the tile.
| Product and trowel | Tile area | Single-sided | Double-sided |
|---|---|---|---|
| MTC-2222, 6x6x6 mm | Up to 120 cm² | 4 kg/m²: 25 ÷ 4 = 6.25 m² | 5–6 kg/m²: 25 ÷ 6 ≈ 4.2 m², 25 ÷ 5 = 5 m² |
| MTC-2222, 8x8x8 mm | 120–500 cm² | 5 kg/m²: 25 ÷ 5 = 5 m² | 6.5 kg/m²: 25 ÷ 6.5 ≈ 3.8 m² |
| MTC-2222, 10x10x10 mm | 500–2000 cm² | 5.5 kg/m²: 25 ÷ 5.5 ≈ 4.5 m² | 7–8 kg/m²: 25 ÷ 8 ≈ 3.1 m², 25 ÷ 7 ≈ 3.6 m² |
| MTC-2233, 6x6x6 mm | Not stated in the data sheet | 4.00–4.75 kg/m²: 25 ÷ 4.75 ≈ 5.3 m², 25 ÷ 4 = 6.25 m² | 5.50–6.50 kg/m²: 25 ÷ 6.5 ≈ 3.8 m², 25 ÷ 5.5 ≈ 4.5 m² |
| MTC-2233, 8x8x8 mm | Not stated in the data sheet | 5.50–6.50 kg/m²: 25 ÷ 6.5 ≈ 3.8 m², 25 ÷ 5.5 ≈ 4.5 m² | 7.50–8.50 kg/m²: 25 ÷ 8.5 ≈ 2.9 m², 25 ÷ 7.5 ≈ 3.3 m² |
Source: MegaTech MTC-2222 and MTC-2233 technical data sheets; m² values are calculated for a 25 kg bag.
The MTC-2233 data sheet’s own coverage column lists about 5–6 m² for 6x6x6 mm and about 3.5–4.5 m² for 8x8x8 mm. These values are close to the single-sided calculation. The data sheet does not tie the trowel to tile size; it only says “suited to the tile size”.
MegaTech data sheets do not say which tiles need double-sided bonding. According to a presentation by The Tile Association, the British wall tiling standard BS 5385-1:2018 recommends buttering a thin coat of mortar onto the back of the tile before it goes onto the combed bed, for large tiles over 3600 cm² and for tiles with ribbed or deep-keyed backs. An area of 3600 cm² equals a 60×60 cm tile; at this size, weigh the product choice together with the tile manufacturer’s instructions and the specification.
How many m² does granite tile adhesive cover?
A 25 kg bag of MTC-2232 granite tile adhesive covers 5–6.25 m² at the 4–5 kg/m² consumption in its data sheet (25 ÷ 5 = 5 m², 25 ÷ 4 = 6.25 m²). The data sheet does not tie this value to trowel or tile size, and does not separate single-sided and double-sided bonding.
In large formats, the product is defined for ceramics with water absorption below 3% and smaller than 60×60 cm. Double-sided bonding uses more adhesive, so treat 4–5 kg/m² as the lower limit in that case.

How many bags of tile adhesive do I need?
For MegaTech products, the number of bags is found by multiplying the area (m²) by the data sheet consumption (kg/m²) and dividing by 25; round the result up. You can do the calculation in four steps:
- Measure the area: If the walls and floor take different tiles, calculate the areas separately.
- Choose the data sheet row: Take the consumption that matches the product, tile size, trowel and single-sided or double-sided bonding.
- Find the kilograms: Multiply the area by the kg/m² value. If there is a range, calculate both ends.
- Convert to bags: Divide the kilograms by 25 and round up.
The example below is for a 30 m² floor laid with 30×30 cm tiles (900 cm²). Because the MTC-2233 data sheet does not tie the trowel to tile size, the example assumes an 8x8x8 mm trowel.
| Product and data sheet row | Consumption (kg/m²) | Material for 30 m² | Bag calculation (÷ 25) |
|---|---|---|---|
| MTC-2221, 20–40 cm, 8 mm | 5–6 | 150–180 kg | 6–7.2: 6–8 bags |
| MTC-2222, 10x10x10 mm, single-sided | 5.5 | 165 kg | 6.6: 7 bags |
| MTC-2222, 10x10x10 mm, double-sided | 7–8 | 210–240 kg | 8.4–9.6: 9–10 bags |
| MTC-2232 | 4–5 | 120–150 kg | 4.8–6: 5–6 bags |
| MTC-2233, 8x8x8 mm, single-sided | 5.50–6.50 | 165–195 kg | 6.6–7.8: 7–8 bags |
| MTC-2233, 8x8x8 mm, double-sided | 7.50–8.50 | 225–255 kg | 9–10.2: 9–11 bags |

The example only shows the calculation and is not a product recommendation. The MTC-2232 value is not tied to a trowel or tile size in its data sheet, so it cannot be compared directly with the other rows.
Application note from MegaUsta: On a large job, use the first bag as your measure: note how many m² it covered when it runs out and update the number of remaining bags accordingly. Do not spread mortar over a wide area in one go either. According to the MTC-2221, MTC-2222 and MTC-2232 data sheets, tiles are placed on the combed mortar within 20 minutes; scraping off and discarding the mortar in the part you could not reach throws off the take-off.
What waste allowance should you add for tile adhesive?
MegaTech data sheets give no value for a waste allowance, so we do not give a percentage here. Round up the number of bags from the calculation.
One visible source of extra consumption is mortar that passes its working life. According to the MTC-2221, MTC-2222 and MTC-2232 data sheets, mixed mortar is used within 5 hours and mortar that hardens in the container is discarded. All four MegaTech tile adhesive data sheets say that expired mortar must not be mixed with water or dry mortar and reused.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many m² does 25 kg of tile adhesive cover?
A 25 kg bag of MegaTech tile adhesive covers about 2.9–12.5 m², based on the consumption in the data sheets. With MTC-2221, on 10–20 cm tiles with a 6 mm trowel and 4 kg/m² consumption, one bag covers 6.25 m². On tiles larger than 40 cm with a 10 mm trowel and 7–8 kg/m², this falls to about 3.1–3.6 m².
How many kg of adhesive does 1 m² of tile need?
According to MegaTech data sheets, 1 m² of tile needs 2–8.5 kg of adhesive, depending on the product, tile size and trowel. MTC-2221 uses 5–6 kg/m² on 20–40 cm tiles with an 8 mm trowel, and MTC-2232 granite adhesive uses 4–5 kg/m². The highest value, 8.5 kg/m², belongs to MTC-2233 with an 8x8x8 mm trowel and double-sided bonding.
How many m² of wall or floor tile does a bag of adhesive cover?
A 25 kg bag of MTC-2221 tile adhesive covers about 3.1–12.5 m², depending on tile size. According to the data sheet, one bag covers 12.5 m² with tiles under 5 cm, 6.25 m² with 10–20 cm tiles and about 4.2–5 m² with 20–40 cm tiles. This is a theoretical calculation; the evenness of the surface and the workmanship can change actual consumption.
How much more adhesive does double-sided bonding use?
According to the MTC-2222 and MTC-2233 data sheets, double-sided bonding raises consumption by 1–2.5 kg/m² with the same trowel. For example, MTC-2222 with an 8x8x8 mm trowel uses 5 kg/m² single-sided and 6.5 kg/m² double-sided, so the area one 25 kg bag covers falls from 5 m² to about 3.8 m². The MTC-2221 and MTC-2232 data sheets give no double-sided value.
How much adhesive do 60×60 tiles use?
MegaTech data sheets give no clear value for 60×60 cm tiles. The MTC-2221 table lists 7–8 kg/m² for tiles larger than 40 cm, but MTC-2221 and MTC-2233 are defined for small and medium tiles. The MTC-2222 table ends at 2000 cm², and the MTC-2232 data sheet covers ceramics smaller than 60×60 cm. For a calculation, the closest data sheet value is 7–8 kg/m², which gives about 3.1–3.6 m² per 25 kg bag.
What waste allowance should a tile adhesive calculation include?
MegaTech data sheets give no value for a waste allowance, so we do not recommend a fixed percentage. Round up the result of the calculation based on area, consumption and the 25 kg bag. On large jobs, measure how many m² the first bag actually covers and update the number of remaining bags accordingly.
